Bad kissingen: winter coat for new laboratory building

The shell for the new laboratory building has been completed. Workers apply the dam material to the walls of the building. A metal structure is mounted on the embankment, into which only the panels for the facade cladding are later hooked. Visually, the new building will later blend in with the existing laboklin buildings on the other side of steubenstrabe. "The result is an alignment with the existing structure," explains, explains managing director elisabeth muller.

The veterinary laboratory is now expanding its site in the former barracks for the third time. A four-story extension is currently being built for around ten million euros. This will provide 5500 square meters of additional space for office and administrative staff. "We are currently well on schedule", she reports. If the work continues to run smoothly, the building will be completed by the end of march 2020, just under a year after the start of construction. The move is planned for the beginning of april. Then the employees from the telephone customer service, accounting, purchasing, shipping and marketing departments occupy their new rooms. From the laboratory side, research and development laboratories as well as the pathology department will be housed on the opposite side of the street.

Data highway for laboratory equipment

Inside the construction site, drywallers are pulling in the first walls and laying manholes, pipes and lines for the building services. The biggest chunk: "we need 70 to 80 kilometers of data cable in the new building", explains alexander schrenk, who keeps an eye on the work from a technical point of view. This mass is necessary, he says, because the laboratory technology in particular generates correspondingly large amounts of data.

By christmas, the windows should be installed, the building sealed, and the ventilation system commissioned and connected to the district heating system. "The airing is the main machine", says schrenk. For laboratories, fixed air exchange rates are specified. In the case of laboklin, the air in a room must be completely exchanged once every seven and a half minutes. "A lot of air is moved in the laboratory during the day. The plant must also be able to do this", he says. The ventilation is not only responsible for air exchange, but also serves as heating, air conditioning, air filter and is coupled with a heat recovery system. "So we don’t waste valuable energy on the outside", explains managing director muller.

In the laboratory, the many machines also generate a lot of process energy – in other words, the equipment warms up a room with. This process energy will be used at the same time. The laboratory has to adhere to strict energy specifications, with a recovery rate of around 90 percent. "The loss is minimal", explains schrenk.

The ventilation system and building services are located in the attic. The rest of the floor will be converted into a seminar room that can accommodate up to 100 people. "We are currently planning the details of what we want to have in terms of media technology", reports muller. It needs to be suitable for videoconferencing in particular, so that staff can attend meetings from home, from the office or from a subsidiary lab. "The technology must be stable so that, for example, ultrasound images, presentations or microscopy sessions can be added at any time, she explains the requirements. Laboklin seeks advice on media technology from the center for telemedicine.

"We have now had the year of change", says the managing director. The smaller subsidiary laboratories in austria, switzerland, spain and slovakia have outgrown their rooms and have become larger. For 2020, the expansion of the site in poland and the company headquarters in bad kissingen is planned.
