Costs met, time lost made up for, new district heating main is in operation. Peter baj, head of the waste management association and producer of district heating in coburg with the waste-to-energy plant in neuses, was relieved on friday. For the past 24 hours, the new section of the main pipeline has been connected through kanonenweg, and further through lossau-, mohren- and kanalstrabe. The old and unreliable line in rast- and callenberger strabe is now finally overflowing.
"Despite some unforeseen things and weather-related difficulties, the construction workers were able to make up for lost time, so that they finished on time", says peter baj, and construction manager benedikt rode nods in agreement at a press conference. From april until now, residents and motorists in the bahnhofsviertel have had to live with obstructions and impairments due to the construction work. Some had more, some with less understanding.
Mohrenstrabe and kanalstrabe will immediately receive a final asphalt surface
The lower part of mohrenstrabe and kanalstrabe will remain closed for the next two weeks "because these roads are now being completely finished", says peter baj, declares the ZAW manager. Originally, the temporary road surface was not to be replaced by a smooth asphalt layer until next year. During the last two weeks of october, the lossaustrabe and the kalenderweg will be asphalted, and then the lossaustrabe will temporarily only be accessible from the city center. "But in 2017, the luther year will also be celebrated in coburg, and there should be no construction work on this main road," says gertrud leumer, the plant manager explains the change of schedule.
The new 800-meter long section of the district heating pipeline – which always consists of two pipes, one for the supply of hot water, the other for the return to the waste-to-energy plant – replaces the old and dilapidated pipeline in the raststrabe. At that time, asbestos-cement pipes were used for the insulation of the inner steel pipe of the district heating pipeline. The railroad station district has been flooded several times in the past years and decades, water penetrated the insulation of the district heating pipeline. "This will never dry out again", peter baj "and the steel pipe is rusting through." Asbestos cement pipes were also no longer used and produced today.
ZAW therefore built a new pipeline from a shaft in kanonenweg near the callenberg underpass to the connection point in kanalstrabe near the vocational school. "We can do without access shafts along the entire 800-meter stretch", so baj. On the old line there were about a dozen such shafts.
The weather in the past months has also caused headaches for the construction workers. "Due to the heavy rain, a lot of groundwater had penetrated into the construction pits. "We had assumed the normal value of 20 cubic meters of water. In fact, it was worth ten times as much at times." There were also "many wild lines underground that were not shown on the plans". The workers also dug up an old arch bridge.
In addition to the work on the new district heating main line to the transfer station on the suc site on bamberger strabe, gas, water, and district heating distribution lines were relocated at the same time.
