Rosebud Elementary School

Rosebud Elementary School was named for the former Rosebud Elementary school that was open from 1903 to 1938, serving this community.

Rosebud was first organized as a school in 1903 and was built on 1.5 acres donated by Henry Thomas. However, a deed for the land was not given to the school, and on Mr. Thomas’ death in 1929, the land was sold to the county. The county, in turn, put the school parcel on the auction block. Rosebud School trustees O. Z. Cox, A. S. Cox, and R. W. Johnson were the highest bidders for the land, which was purchased for $125. The trustees received the deed on Dec. 2, 1929.

     Originally a one-room schoolhouse, Rosebud School added another room to accommodate growth. The school’s two teachers taught about 30 students in grades 1-7 and only during the months of January, February, March, July, and August. Rosebud School closed its doors in 1938 when the students transferred to what was then known as Grayson School.

     Rosebud Elementary, located on Rosebud Road in the Rosebud Community, is across the road from the site of the original Rosebud School.

     Over the years, the Rosebud name has sustained a legacy of innovation and pride and the Rosebud community has experienced growth and renewal. It is that growth that prompted the Gwinnett County Board of Education and CEO/Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks to plan for a new school to accommodate the growing South Gwinnett Cluster. 

     The school’s first motto,“Anchored in Excellence,” focused on learning first for every student, maximizing every opportunity, every day, to become another of Gwinnett’s worldclass schools. It speaks to the school’s association with the South Gwinnett Cluster and the work it has done to ensure students receive a quality education. The school is committed to providing a safe, collaborative environment to develop a community of responsible lifelong learners, critical thinkers, and interactive producers who engage in diverse, rigorous learning experiences. To enhance those learning experiences, Rosebud Elementary offers diverse extracurricular activities for students, including male and female mentoring groups, Chorus, Robotics Club, Junior Beta Club, Art Club, Care Club, Drama Club, Movie Club, News Crew, Student Council, Safety Patrol, and Rosebud Teacher Assistants. In addition, more than 100 students participate in reading and mathematics academic intervention opportunities after school. Rosebud works hard to raise our students’ awareness of the community in which they live. The school has been recognized for its environmental education efforts as a Reaching Higher Green & Healthy School by Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful. In addition, the school allows students to participate in the work to find community solutions to problems through their participation in United Way and Relay for Life.

     Rosebud Elementary School opened its doors to more than 1,000 students in 2008. Today’s enrollment sits at approximately 1,100 students. Just as the original Rosebud School did in 1903, today’s school serves as a beacon of community pride and as a partner with parents, businesses, and the community. At Rosebud Elementary we take pride in the fact that being “Anchored in Excellence”means being an active part of our community, being hopeful about the future of our students, and showing growth in our academic performance because of the value we place on all students receiving a quality education every day.
