Science, 6-12

The science program in Gwinnett County consists of a comprehensive, K-12 curriculum that is enhanced at every grade level with inquiry-based exploration. Through the integration of science and engineering practices with content, students develop a strong understanding of the earth, life, and physical sciences, as well as problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.

GCPS Science Mission: The mission of the Gwinett County K-12 Science Program is to support leaders and teachers in providing all students with daily safe and engaging learning experiences rooted in the AKS that cultivate curiosity, promote problem solving skills, and inspire innovation, resulting in graduates who can respond to opportunities and apply their learning within their local and global community.

In the middle grades, students take part in a three-year sequence of earth science, life science, and physical science. Middle grades science in GCPS focuses on inquiry-based content instruction in conjunction with practices necessary for the development of future scientists and engineers. To that end, students will refine their ability to make obtain, evaluate, and communicate scientific information while developing skills necessary for investigation and innovation. In high school, students will complete a four-year sequence of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, plus either elective courses and/or AP courses. In all courses, significant instructional time is devoted to laboratory-based experiences. The GCPS Science Program includes Advanced Placement options such as Biology, Chemistry, Environment Science, and Physics. Other science electives include Anatomy and Physiology, Astronomy, Environmental Science, Epidemiology, Forensic Science, Meteorology, Microbiology, Oceanography, and Earth Systems. Each school may select electives to offer based on student interest.
