Writing Test Development Process

GCPS teachers are trained on the writing assessment design framework and components of high-quality writing assessments prior to working collaboratively to develop writing assessments and associated scoring rubrics. GCPS assessment experts review initial drafts of items.​ 

Assessment development is performed by trained GPCS teachers and is conducted annually based on content area and grade level.

GCPS teachers review assessments to ensure writing tasks are accessible and appropriate measures of the content and writing standards.

The assessment review is performed by GCPS district leaders and teachers annually based on need from new development.

Items approved after final reviews are administered to students.  

Field testing is conducted by GCPS district leaders, teachers, and students once per grade and content area.

Teachers review student responses and scoring guidelines to establish the range of acceptable responses for each item. 

Rangefinding of Field Tests are conducted annually by GCPS teachers.

Items are scored by GCPS teachers to train the AI tool, which completes scoring. The results are validated and analyzed. 

Scoring of Field Tests are conducted annually by GCPS teachers and testing vendor.

Teachers review the data and writing assessments to ensure items are valid and appropriate measures of the content and writing standards. 

Data review of Field Tests are conducted annually by district leaders and teachers.

Final writing assessments are approved for continued use on summative writing assessments.

Operational testing is conducted annually by GCPS district leaders, teachers, and students.
